Sustainable U

From the ancient basement of North Hall to a green roof on East Campus Mall, students are playing a new game — but this one, with a mission. Cathy Middlecamp’s environmental studies class has been testing Sustainable U, an app for smartphones and tablets that points out waste, water, energy and transportation features across campus, and shows students how they can make choices to avoid a bleak environmental future.

Arts award ceremony celebrates reorganization

UW-Madison’s annual Arts Awards reception celebrated the newly reorganized presence of the Arts Institute. Chancellor Rebecca Blank has granted permission to make the institute the first division on campus solely dedicated to the arts, with big changes planned in the coming year.

UW-Madison likes to tweet—a lot. And a new study shows that it’s having an impact. The university was recently ranked as the second-most influential U.S. university on Twitter, according to a study covered by Times Higher Education and conducted by Internet marketing firm Coldlime.

Eight professors receive Romnes Faculty Fellowships

Eight promising young members of the UW-Madison faculty have been honored with Romnes Faculty Fellowships. Selected by a Graduate School committee, winners each receive a $50,000 award for research, supported by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation.

Paulnock remains interim Arboretum director

Donna Paulnock will continue her service as interim director of the UW Arboretum, home to historic ecological restoration research and one of Madison’s most popular natural areas. The top candidate to become director on a permanent basis withdrew from consideration for personal reasons.

Messing named Waisman Center interim director

Albee Messing

On Sept. 1, Albee Messing will step in as interim director of the Waisman Center, while current director Marsha R. Mailick serves as the interim vice chancellor for research at the Graduate School. Mailick says Messing has a "proven track record of effectively working with campus and community partners.”

Campus, System communicator Breuscher dies

Harvey Breuscher

Harvey Breuscher, a former Associated Press reporter who lectured in journalism in the 1960s before going on to lead UW-Madison's news and publications unit and UW System's statewide communications efforts, died last month at age 89. He retired from UW System in 1990.
