What’s the best way from Point A to Point B on campus? Whether it’s a secret passageway time-saving route or guide to getting up Bascom Hill, we’d like to hear about some of your best and most overlooked ways to get around. Share your thoughts.
If you are “legally allowed” to enter campus building(s) then try to enter building from one end and exit from another. Here’s what I do to go to Memorial Library or Helen C White library from DoIT. Start from DoIT -> Chemistry building -> walk one block from N Mills St to Brooks St -> School of Business -> Humanities Building -> Wisconsin Historical Society -> Memorial Union -> College Library (Helen C White). We (UW employees) don’t visit buildings on campus unless we have a meeting. This will give you an exposure to other architectures and building designs. Especially during winter you will appreciate cold/hot walk Here’s one more thing, next time you have a meeting at one of these buildings, you won’t feel lost. Go explore campus.
I walk From Digital Publishing & Printing Services building down on East Campus Mall up to Bascom Hall* each week for a Classified Staff Advisory Committee meeting. I learned that it is much quicker to go UP – and take the 2nd floor path on the Mitchell Theater and the bridge over to the Music Department and then over to Bascom, than fight vehicle and student traffic down on the ground level.
*No advice for Bascom Hill except hydrate before attempting it, and allow enough time to catch your breath at the top!
When I was an undergraduate I was very sensitive to cold. And so when winter would roll around I would look for the warmest routes. When I could I would use the tunnels connecting Nutritional Science to McCardle Labs to the Medical School. Then I would cross on Charter Street into Chamberlin and follow the tunnel to Sterling and use the passageway that connected to Van Vleck. So I got a lot of exercise and was able to stay warm!
1.The shortest way by car from Henry Mall AREA to Chasen Museum AREA:
Linden Dr. east – turn right on Charter – turn left uphill
before University Ave. = proceed by Lathrop and Law School
to Music Hall and park car near the corner of Park Str.
Walk across the Park Str.,to Chasen.
The best way to get from Henry Mall to N. Charter, especially in the winter, is going through the Genetics-Biotechnology building, going north across the lot 20 ramp into McArdle (the only time you’re outside for this route)straight past the elevators and into the tunnel. Turn right and keep following the hallway. It will lead you through the school of social work building and into Medical Sciences Center, where you just keep walking straight until you come out on N. Charter.
When I walk from the Mechanical Engineering to Memorial Union I like to take the Lakeshore Path as it is so much quieter and scenic.
Make use of the bridge connecting Humanities to Vilas. So much quicker than waiting at the crosswalk intersection on University & East Campus.
When I walk from Education Science Building area up to Bascom Hill, I always take Brook street, cross University Ave, enter the law school student area, climb upstairs, and take the exit on the second floor. You’ll find yourself across the Education Building, and North Hall and South Hall are very close.
